In the moment, it’s very easy to confuse love and infatuation. Infatuation is ephemeral. Love is strikingly permanent. Yet they both consist of the same internal radiance.

The easiest way to recognize true love is through loss. Typically infatuations are forgotten just as easily as they began. But it is only during the loss of a loved one do you understand how earnestly you felt. Your heart is only a couple inches thick, but in it a ravine emerges, deep but just wide enough for god to spit into it.

You can interpret loss in this case in any way. It doesn’t have to be death—though it often is.

Sometimes it feels childish to love. But then again, it’s the most courageous thing one can do.
